PIMD Mixed 5s & BBQ
Saturday featured one of PIMD’s most anticipated events of the year—the Fives Tournament—with an added highlight: Calvin’s famous paella. With 18 teams competing across all three greens, the stage was set for a great day of bowls, friendly competition, and camaraderie.
The morning session saw teams split into singles and fours disciplines. There were numerous tightly contested matches, including one singles game that stretched to an impressive 25 ends. By the lunch break, only four teams remained undefeated. In the afternoon, teams faced the strategic challenge of dividing into pairs and triples lineups. Once again, the competition was fierce, with many matches decided by the narrowest of margins. By the end of the day, no team remained undefeated.. The top four teams all finished with three wins.
Fourth Place went to the team of Hugo, Michael, Cindy, Jesse, and Rachel with 3 wins and a +14 shot differential.
Third Place was claimed by Janie, Chris, John, Judy, and Patricia, who finished with 3 wins and a +21 shot differential.
Second Place went to Mei, Calvin, Reggie, Bill, and Andrew. They also finished with 3 wins and a +21 shot differential but secured the higher position on ratio.
First Place went to Kevin, Ron, Karen, Joe, and Mary Beth, whose impressive performance earned them 3 wins and a +28 shot differential. After a day of bowls, participants were finally rewarded with Calvin’s delicious paella, served alongside a generous helping of San Francisco hospitality.
Evidence of a great day can be seen in the photos below.

National Qualifier: Women’s Pairs PIMD Playdowns
Location: Rossmoor Saturday / Berkeley Sunday
Rachel Marcuson and CeCe Le Messurier to Represent PIMD at Nationals
The PIMD Women’s Pairs Playdowns took place over two beautiful, sunny days. Rossmoor welcomed four women’s teams for Day 1 to play the first two of their round robin games. The women played 18-end games, and at the end of the first day Rachel Marcuson and CeCe Le Messurier were 2-0, with Ginger Harris and Janice Bell, and Phyllis Yau-Chan and Mei Chan close behind. After the third game, any first place tie would see an additional tie-breaker game held
Day 2 was held at Berkeley and the last round robin game was played in the morning. A supportive group of spectators saw many great bowls played and in the end, Rachel and CeCe ended 3-0, with the other three teams tied for game points in second. Janine Maddock and Hyldi Vieira just edged past Ginger and Janice for second place based on differential. Rachel and CeCe will now represent PIMD in the National Championships to be held at Laguna LBC in September. Congratulations!
Many thanks to the host clubs, the players, and Joanne Ribeiro, our fabulous tournament director. Pictured below, left to right: Hyldi, Janine, Janice, Ginger, CeCe, Rachel, Phyllis, Mei. Further below: Winners CeCe and Rachel, then runners up Hyldi and Janine.

National Qualifier: Men's Singles PIMD Playdowns
Location: San Jose LBC
Men’s Singles Playdowns - Daniel Gorelick is the Man
Twenty of PIMD’s top men bowlers came together at the San Jose LBC this last weekend to compete in the singles playdowns to earn the right to represent PIMD in the US National Championships. The men started bright and early at 8am both days. All of Saturday and early Sunday were dedicated to six rounds of group play. After completing the group play, Jesse May, Kevin Reynolds, Tom Burnoski, Rob Hoey, Frankie Napoli, Daniel Gorelick, Sasha Halper, and Calvin Darling qualified in the too eight to compete in a single elimination bracket. Jesse and Kevin held the two two seeds after having won all of their games in group play. Rob was our PIMD singles player at nationals last year and he was keen to repeat this year. In a first to 18 game, Rob was down to Calvin 17-10 in the semifinals and then refused to concede anymore points to win 18-17, creating a rematch of last year’s final vs Daniel Gorelick, who defeated Kevin in the other semifinal. This year Daniel prevailed in the final with his signature relentless consistency. Congratulations Daniel! PIMD has very strong representation for the men’s singles. Thanks to all of our players for making this a successful event and thanks to the our wonderful hosts at San Jose Lawn Bowling Club, specifically Muriel Pusateri, Marge Ling, Mark Cooney, and Mike Coiner, for supporting us for this intense weekend of bowling.
